There are two types of Plan B or Morning after pill:
Next Choice One Dose and Plan B One-Step (levonorgesterol pills)
Ella (ulipristal acetate)
Pregnancy doesn’t happen right after sex. That’s why it’s possible to prevent pregnancy even after the fact. It can take up to six days for the sperm and egg to meet after having sex. Emergency contraception pills work by keeping a woman’s ovary from releasing an egg for longer than usual. If the egg and sperm do not meet, a pregnancy cannot occur.
You might have also heard that the morning-after pill causes an abortion, this is not true. The morning-after pill is not the abortion pill. Emergency contraception prevents a pregnancy from beginning, but it does not cause an abortion.
Plan B One-Step and Next Choice One Dose are up to 89 percent effective when taken within 72 hours (three days) after unprotected sex. They continue to reduce the risk of pregnancy up to 120 hours (five days) after unprotected sex, but they are less effective as time passes. Ella is 85 percent effective if taken within 120 hours (five days) after unprotected sex. It stays just as effective as time passes after sex. It will reduce your risk of pregnancy if you start it up to 120 hours (five days) after unprotected intercourse. Some brands have one pill, and some have two. The instructions on brands with two pills may say to take the pills 12 hours apart. After you take emergency contraception, it’s normal for your next period to be different from usual. Your period may be earlier or later than usual, or it may be heavier, lighter, more spotty, or the same as usual. Be sure to tell any health care provider that you may see before your next period that you have taken the morning-after pill.
